ZDNet Blogger Russell Shaw Dies At Age 60

March 16, 2008 · Print This Article

Russell Shaw, the veteran ZDNet blogger who covered Internet telephone issues, died suddenly Friday, March 14 at age 60. Shaw died after complaining he’d “come down with something” after arriving in San Jose, Calif. to write about the Emerging Technology Conference.

“Some mornings stink. I had gone offline for a few hours Saturday to wake up this morning to find that Russell Shaw died. At this point, I’m just stunned,” wrote ZDNet Editor in Chief Larry Dignan. Shaw’s girlfriend Ellen said Shaw wasn’t feeling well Thursday and tried to rest, thinking he could sleep it off. Dignan said the “bug ” the blogger was complaining of, sounded similar to one that was making the rounds.

Shaw was the second VoIP ZDNet blogger to die recently. Marc Orchant died in December at age 50.

Bloggers quickly reacted to news of Shaw’s death. Om Malik, the former Business 2.0 who now heads his own blogging network, remembered how Shaw helped when he was creating NewTeevee, a blog about Internet television.

“His passing reminds us of the fragility of life, and how quickly it can all be gone. First Marc Orchant passing on and now Russ … it has been a tough and somber weekend.”

CNet blogger Dan Farber remembered Shaw as a prolific blogger who wrote about rock concerts, as well as technology and contributed to the Huffington Post.

The snarky tech news site The Inquirer said the outpouring of blogging memorials will likely earn Shaw at least a couple of pages of Google search results. However, Shaw could live on in social networking, where another writer still “exists” via a LinkedIn profile, despite dying in 2005.
